Alan1 is an Electro wonderkid from Rome. His tunes have the jolt of Ed Banger but the warmth of Chicago, and it’s no surprise Erol Alkan has been pestering him for his freshest tracks. His fine work has been vinyl pressed on the Nature and Final Frontier labels under the watchful eye of head honcho Marco Passarani. He’s been working the live circuit and his amazing MPC show at Sonar left 200 or so afternoon dancers in a sweaty mess. I caught up with Alan1 over t’internet, and asked him some things…
Hey mate! How are you??
Just got back home from New York City…..SICK!
Coolio. So…..What’s going on in the Vatican City right now?
Here in the Vatican City everything’s fine, the sun shines and the Devil is far from our souls.
I hear quite a lot of influence from France in your work, could you tell me about this?
Actually I like and respect some French producers. I like how they work on every little detail of a track and I like to put a lot of details in the sound myself. Beyond that I don’t see my work so close to the French touch.
We first met at the Red Bull Music Academy in Toronto, good times! Can you give us an impression of life at the academy?
RBMA is madness…so many people, so much music. I have a lot of nice memories from Toronto. I think the Academy is much more of a human chance than a professional chance. The great thing is that almost every participant I spoke to after the academy told me that their vision about music changed after this “adventure”. I think this has a huge meaning. Unfortunately not many collaborations are going on with my academy mates, but I hope there will be in future.
How was it playing live at Sonar?
Playing at Sonar was a good experience. I performed my live set during the day time and as you may know, “Sonar dia” is quite different from Sonar by night. A completely different mood. Actually it was the first time for me playing “out of club’s shadow”, I really enjoyed it. It seemed to me that people were much more in “listening mode” than usual.
Please tell us about your set-up
While producing I use pretty much everything, analog machines, friend’s voices, toys, samples…and also a computer!…I guess it would sound more interesting to hear that i make music with a wooden box-machine I made myself??
Hehe, nah analog machines over wooden boxes any day! What does the future have in store for Alan1?
For the future who knows…I would like to challenge myself on something bigger than a 12”. I have quite a lot of “more listening” kind of tracks and I would like to work on an album. Recently I’m making some videos with a friend of mine and I like to think about sound and images working together for my upcoming materials.
