Like he wasn’t busy enough with DJing, remixing and finishing up the Count and Sinden album with partner in crime Herve, Sinden has launched his own label, ‘Grizzly’. I’ve known Sinden for a bit now, so when he came up this week to play at Rub a Dub Dub in Newcastle, I was keen to find out more on this new venture. I caught up with him this morning on the label, the new Count and Sinden album, and what 2010 looks like for him.

Hey man, how’s it going?
Pretty good!
So to get started, what’s Grizzly?
Its a new label I started up, I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while but only now it feels like the timing is right.
What sets Grizzly apart from other labels, how is it different?
Well I’m pressing vinyl, loll! But really its all about putting out music I believe in, regardless of genres, styles etc. The label defies category, and also the first few releases have a real sense of fun, its not deliberate, but I like that quality. From the wonky mario bros bassline of WAFA to Brodinski sampling his own burp, I think I may be bringing the fun back into dance, ha ha!
That sounds awesome! So you’ve already mentioned that you and Brodinski are releasing tracks through the label, who else is on?
First up is a Sinden & SBTRKT release, it’s two tracks. Most of the releases I’ll be putting out also buck this remix trend a lot. I’ll only get remixers on if need be, and the two tracks really vary on our release. A side is more techno and bass, and the flip is more deeper and percussive, more garage post dustep stuff. Then, Brodinski’s EP called ‘Arnold Classics’ with a few mixes. I’m really excited about this!
I can tell!
Brodinski who I’m in regular contact with just sent me a track for the label without me even releasing any material. I thought that was a really bold move.

That’s awesome. Apart from the acts already mentioned, do you have any up and coming acts who we may not have heard of which you’re keen to help out by putting their music out on Grizzly?
The next two or three releases following Brodinski are all unknown. That’s another thing I’m keen on is to nurture new artists and present them. I get sent a ton of good music all the time, theres just some amazing music that isn’t getting out there or isn’t presented in the right way.
When you said you’re going to buck the remix trend, and only take one on “if it needs it”, couldn’t this have an adverse affect, maybe suggesting the original can’t stand on its own?
I wouldn’t put out music if the title track isn’t strong enough, too much these days people are putting out weak music and overcompensating with a tin of remixes, it just seems to be the model. I’m really into the simplicity of one or two tracks per release, it says this is the tracks you needs, there’s already enough rubbish out there.

I like it, to be honest, Grizzly seems like an awesome breath of fresh air, I’m into it. But we can’t conduct this interview without asking about Mega Mega Mega [The Count & Sinden Album], which by the looks of things on twitter, is moments from being released, didn’t you just finish it up this week?
We put the album to bed this week, went into the listening room at Domino and played the final track, it was a really good feeling to get positive response form the head of the label. This week we just did the final editing and sequencing, the album wool land around June/July with a lead single just before.
With that release in mind, is your summer pretty much made up of touring that album?
Well we haven’t quite decided that yet, we’re quite casual about it, there are some Count & Sinden festival dates and some solo stuff.

Looking even further ahead, whats next for you? Anything exciting, as well as Grizzly and C&S album of course, for Sinden in 2010?
Next step is to establish Grizzly and keep putting music out there – look out for a really special track from WAFA and a release from Bassanovva which is a bomb. Going to work on the first SInden solo material too and put on some good parties. We have Mega Mega Moda coming up, its a tie in with Andy George & Jaymo’s Moda night in London, we have Paul Epworth and Zinc dropping in as well as Tom Starr.
Thanks for this, any last words?
Just thanks for the support and go check out my new website which will be up and running soon!
