Toddla, busy as always, flew to Jamaica last week to work on some tracks with Diplo & switch for the new Major Lazer album. He’s been a close affiliate of Diplo’s for a while, and I’m excited to see what comes out of this collab project. I caught up with him this week to talk Jamaica, Major Lazer, his new record label and his plans for a second album.

Diplo (Left) & Toddla T in Jamaica
Hey man, how are you?
Good, Monday trough from the weekend.
I bet. So, to start off tell us about your involvement with the new Major Lazer album, and how it all came about?
They invited me over to work on the record, so I went and helped them out on a couple of things, writing beats, recording people etc. I love Jamaica, so any excuse to go back is welcomed!
How long have you been involved with Diplo’s various projects?
Dunno really, we’re on a similar vibe and do bare gigs together so it was kinda natural progression to start messing with music together.
Going back to the Major Lazer work, how many tracks are you involved with and do you have more trips planned back to Jamaica?
Boi I can’t even remember, worked on about 3 or 4.
How much input do you have with regards to MCs and the sound of the tracks, as it’s obviously their project?
Its a collab ting, so no more or less than usual you know?
With regards to you won album work, can we expect a second? After ‘Skanky Skanky’ was so well received?
Yeah I want it to be out this year, I’ve got loads of tunes. I went to Jamaica last year by myself on a mission too, so I’ve got plenty of that flavour as well as UK stuff. Its coming out on a different label too.
Which label?
I’ll let you know when I’m allowed.
Ha ha ok then. What can you tell me about Girl Music?
Its a label that myself and Raf Rundell have set up to simply put out music we’re really into. First release was some naughty remix’s of Rebel from my album. Second and more official release is Lady Chann’s ‘Sticky Situation’ EP. Sticky produced EP with a remix from me and Seijiā¦.Bashy!
Nice! Is that already out then? The Lady Chann EP?
Naw
When?
April 19th
When we last spoke things were going well. Skanky Skanky has just dropped to critical acclaim and you’d just started with your Radio 1 show, and now it’s nearly a year later, whats next for Toddla T?
Really into the radio thing, so concentrating on that. New album, some fresh production for other peoples albums and hopefully travelling round DJing will continue. Suppose like last year but try take things bigger.
Who are you looking to collab with in the future? More with Redlight?
Yeah man, me and Redlight share a studio so thats a certain. Working with Seiji, DJ Q and done some stuff with Skream too, so bits and bats.
Thanks!
