You may remember we posted on some of Joe’s work before on here, from some his adventures in York and Edinburgh. Well he’s now living in Baltimore and doing a semester studying there. He’s been making frequent trips to New York and been posting his photos from Baltimore and NY on Cargo Collective and his flickr. I’ve been loving his photos, but there was never the backstory to my favourite pictures he’d posted online. I wanted to know more, so I hit him up and he’s written the stories behind some of his favourite photos from his trip so far.

Suzie Zak, one of my favourite people here, we have photo class together and this was just outside school one day getting something to eat. She had been to a show the night before and I love the underage X’s that the kids get so they can’t get served. check out her photography here

Alex Wein, Baltimore born and raised photographer. this was taken on his roof, we love to hang out up there with some drinks. find his work here.

This is my good friend rob, one sunny day in bolton hill. we where drinking up on his roof and then this ended up happening. he’s leaping from his house to the next and I love that he still has his beer in his hand. Check out Rob’s photos here.

Nosebleed seats at the Yankees/Orioles game. We hid bottles of whiskey for the bag search and then took the highest seats to drink and watch this game. Baltimore won.

Izzy Jarvis, this girl is amazing, we went for a skate downtown and stopped at this dinner i love in holywood corner. their milkshakes are the best but just don’t buy the oatmeal. here we are drawing designs for patches we made to stitch into our favourite summer shorts.

North Avenue, widely known as one of the most dangerous parts of baltimore. me and jasmine ended up walking down that way one afternoon and these two guys stopped us selling these dogs, they were amazing. i had to tell the guy i had no money for a dog but i just had to take a photo. he was totally down, he had a scar stretching right down his belly and what could only be bullet wounds speckled down his left arm. I didn’t get his name but him and his buddy had the cutest puppies ever.

Suzie and her garden.- Suzie has been planting all kinds of nice treats in her flat. she was so excited when they started to blossom and grow. she had lugged that massive sack of soil you can see in the corner up to her apartment too, proud of you Suze!

This is Rivkah, one of my best friends in baltimore. I was super excited to see new york city when I first arrived. Rivkah grew up in brooklyn and and stayed with her at her parents house one weekend. here we are eating snacks on her fire escape, looking across bay ridge towards manhattan. perfect trip!

Freedom Tunnel, Harlem – this is the notorious freedom tunnel, this history of this place is nuts. With my friends Joe and Mikael we took the train all the way up manhattan to 125th in harlem. It was a dead sunny day during the spring holidays, we hoped the fences and entered the subway system where it becomes overground. this was shot looking back at the entrance after walking only a few blocks. We walked for ages, the thing stretches right down manhattan. It’s still in use, so we had some scary encounters with monstrous trains down there. Joe is an amazing photographer living in Williamsburg, he has some images from our trip on his website.

This car was parked in a neighborhood in Baltimore that me and my friend michelle love to go to. There’s a great cafe called Golden West up there and this was taken on the walk up to the shops. It’s real nice up there, and I couldn’t resist getting a picture of this bad ass car, there’s loads like this in the city.

3am bike ride with my friends Leah and Jasmine, It was super quiet that night so we rode on the highway on our way back from the italian district where we went to get 24 hour diner pie. we saw a huge cloud of smoke hovering over the our part of the city, getting closer we arrived just as the fire engines did. this is in the historic district of Mt. Vernon, a thrift store in the basement of these houses had gone up in smoke and they evacuated everyone, the flames had hit each flat and there was smoke filling each window.

Me and my friend Trinh went to the east village for lunch, this was on the pavement outside a skate store near Avenue A. I love the history of Zoo York and all the New York skaters involved. The east village is great, we spent most of the day watching the skaters in Tompkins Square Park, one of my favourite places in the city.

Baltimore was hit by a blizzard in February, i’d never seen so much snow, school was shut for a week because no one could dig out their cars, let alone try to use them on the road. we called it the snowpocalypse and did our best to not go out side other than for snowball fights. This is the street I use regularly, Park Avenue.
