Breaks Of 10 @ Edinburgh International Film Festival

25.06.09

turn_it_header

Last weekend Tom and I were invited to a very special preview of the feature film Turn it Loose. This movie has been the most anticipated snap shot of Bboy culture since the landing of Planet Bboy in 2007. Whereas Planet Bboy followed Cru’s traveling to Germany and Battle of the Year, the Partizan film documents the worlds top 16 Bboys as they embark on Soweto, South Africa, and the internationally acclaimed Red Bull BC1.

C215 – ‘Shoeshiners Show’ – Signal Gallery

23.06.09

shoeshiners_header

From my last encounter with the Parisian stencil artist I got a taste for his underlying love of shoeshinners. Little did I know that this would manifest itself into its own show. In his own words “I have met many street shoe-shiners during my trips around the world. They represent the lower class of urban workers. Almost beggars, they construct their boxes from light and cheap material, just one handmade box containing brushes and creams offering a job that less and less people need. When they get a customer, the working dynamic turns into a humiliating symbol – one bending before the other, polishing his shoes, while the superior one gets annoyed or bored, looking around. Shoe-shining, in French, gave birth to numerous ways of describing flattery: “polishing”, “shining”, “boots-licker”… The lost pride of real street shoe-shiners is easy to encompass with such words, but are we not all discretely licking arses everyday to promote ourselves?” More photos after the Jump.

lewis_evo_header

In our first photography feature, good friend of Breaks Lewis Greener showcases his best photos from the madness that was the Evolution Festival in Newcastle last month. I’ve liked Lewis’ photography for a while now, and I’m stoked to be able to have it on Breaks. Also, check out Lewis’ blog, and food blog, both good reads!

Truck to Back – Freitag Bags

17.06.09

freitag_header

Swiss bag brand Freitag have got it spot on. Not only do they make some on point bags fashion-wise, they also do it using a process that’s so environmentally friendly, and with details and precision so high they could only be Swiss. Freitag use road used truck tarpaulins, old seat belts, used bicycle inner tubes and old airbags, tough matirials indeed. This unique process also means that each bag is a one off, so no two bags look the same.

I think it’s a brilliant idea, something that is at the end of it’s life, and that is costly and hard to dispose of, is given a new lease of life. Our man Tom Finch has one and swears by it. Hit the link to see the production process and some more bags.

Remi/Rough Show – Urban Angel – London

16.06.09

remi_header

Some artists that I have had the pleasure to meet need no introduction. Remi is one of those artists. A talent with literally no boundaries he ceases to amaze me from piece to piece and show to show. Whereas some installations and wall pieces can grab your attention for a few seconds before you smile and move on, with Remi you can get lost in his pieces, and often become submerged amongst the layers. Needless to say his work can only be truly appreciated face to piece. Therefore if your in London this week check out the show at Urban Angel (Special preview 18th June). If you haven’t been living on earth for the past decade and need a little more convincing, I’m not going to twist your arm, the work speaks for itself so see more photos after the Jump.

New Quintin 5 Panel

12.06.09

quintin_header

Anybody who knows me knows I’m a big hat fan, in fact, I’m rarely seen without one adorning my head, and this new fitted 5 panel from Quintin is definitely on my wish list. Quintin have used seersucker, a lightweight fabric which is perfect for summer, and it was designed with the help of Mr. 44 from Foreign Family, who did the front ‘Q’ logo. I’m loving the inside lining too! The hat is dope, and is available from tomorrow at all the Quintin retail outlets. You can’t these in the UK yet, but when you can, I’m on it! Check out more photos after the jump.

Toddla T Interview

09.06.09

toddla_header2

Toddla T, or Tom Bell as he’s otherwise known, is truly on of the next generation of productive, multitasking, media savvy young individuals that are taking control right now. He’s blown up in the last 6 months, and for good reason. He’s bringing something different to the table, an album which isn’t quite what you’d expect, killer DJ sets and strong, tight production. Championed by Sheffield production legend Ross Orton, and non other than Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, Tom looks set to get even bigger as 2009 goes on. His album dropped a few weeks ago, and his new Radio 1 show, as part of ‘In New DJs We Trust’, starts on the 18th June. Toddla played Newcastle last week and I managed to catch up with him for a chat about what he has going on right now

Laidback Luke Interview

06.06.09

lbl_header

Two years ago I was invited over to the Pothouse in Belfast to see none other than LaidBack Luke and Roger Sanchez. The night was on another level. The intimate venue gave the gig real atmosphere. With LBL playing upstairs and Roger Sanchez below the building was shook to its core. Luke exhumed an undeniable flair and a real connection with his music that simply has to be seen to be understood. This was my first visit to Ireland and Its safe to say I left with fond memories, a hangover, and greater respect for the Dutch DJ.

Over the last two years Laidback Luke has cemented his position as an international heavy hitter. With ten years in the game not many can showcase a resume with as much impact as LBL. He is regarded as one of the most creative DJ’s in the world and therefore receives breaks “One to work with” Salute. Following a night at the London superclub Matter I thought it was about time Breaksof10 caught up with the Dutch DJ/Producer and see what he has up his sleeve for 2009 and beyond.
