Last weekend London witnessed the last leg of the 2009 Red Bull X Fighters series and the crowning of Nate Adams as the series winner. With the backdrop of Battersea Power Station and a London skyline the location paralleled the magnitude of the event. In attendance were the worlds finest Freestyle Motorcross athletes of today including last years series winner; Mat Rebeaud, recent face of London Robbie Maddison, the super stylish Eigo Sato of Japan, Rockstars Mike Mason, and none other than the seventeen year old child prodigy; Levi Sherwood of New Zealand. With the roar of 18,000 people, the worlds gnarliest fmx riders, and a Red Bull formula 1 car to boot the atmosphere was nothing short of electric.

With a few noises of conspiracy Mat Rebeaud sustained a run ending crash, Robbie Maddison faced huge technical problems with his bike, and Eigo Sato was carrying a few knocks from practice. However the stage was set for one of the best finals the series has ever seen. With the undeniable Nate Adams going head to head with the elastic kid himself Levi Sherwood.
This was truly the old coming up against the new. Whereas Nate Adams has firmly secured himself within the sport for the last decade Levi Sherwood unquestionably embodies the future of freestyle motorcross.

This is undoubtedly an international sport and it was great to see Chris Birch flying the UK flag at Battersea. Although already accustomed to these kinds of jumps this was his first time competing in this arena against the best in the world. I’m sure this will give Chris a real hunger for this level of competition and I will be catching up with him as he prepares for winter training.
The event series has undoubtedly captured the imagination of the UK audience and with 2009 being the year of Maddo’s Tower Bridge jump and the crowing of Nate…Roll on next year!
