A Quick Catchup With Foamo

31.03.10

In a few short years Foamo, aka Ky Gibbon, has gone from unknown local DJ with high hopes and a job pushing trolleys at Sainsburys to a globetrotting DJ and incredibly in-demand producer. Once mis-branded with the ill fated ‘Fidget House’ moniker, Kye now leads the charge of UK producers using a whole range of UK underground influences to make music unlike anything else in the dance music world. I caught up with Kye recently to discuss his new album, song leakage and his musical influences.

Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77

24.03.10

The Bloody Beetroots may not be everyones cup of tea, but you can’t knock how they’re progressing right now. Sir Bob Rifo, who is essentially the brains behind the whole thing, ditched his old band back in Italy due to band-wide alcoholism, and started the Bloody Beetroots with the ex-bands manager Tommy Tea. Since then they’ve gained a massive reputation as one of the most exciting DJ duo’s to watch, and have recently decided to push the envelop further. The music Bob makes is very much influenced by his punk days, and with Death Crew 77 he’s gone full circle and regressed (Or progressed) back to performing as a band. Bloody Beetroots is currently touring as ‘Death Crew 77′ and is made up of three members, and as you can see above from their recent London performance, they certainly aren’t letting up on the anarchy front. This is dance music like you’ve never seen it before.

Good Afternoon Mr. Jago

23.03.10

So Mr Jago has launched his new site along with a catalogue of his last ten years in the business. For me, a fourteen year old class room doodler, it has taken a few more years to grasp the magnitude of the Jago and what his arrival on the scene symbolised.  In hundreds of years the fable will reveal the immaculate arrival of the artist named Duncan.  Raised in the sticks, influenced by comic book pages, toys, hip-hop, and robots his illustrations attacked the graffiti world. Safe to say his street work wasn’t influenced by illustrations instead his wallwork was born from his sketchbook. He now had a home for his ideas. The rest is history.

His greatest attribute remains his ability to evolve. Only when his last ten years of work is laid bare is this so strikingly obvious. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Only NY

22.03.10

Following a brief stint on the East Coast of America I came home with a bag full of dirty clothing, fresh Alife kicks, and an ONLY NY “Paint Can” tee from Extra Butter. The Independent brand hailing straight out of the West Side of Manhattan has delivered creative design in limited quantities since 1997. With foundations built upon years of skateboarding, and writing graffiti this brand identity finds residence in all parts of the world. In their own words they represent “the hood to Park Ave. and everything between. If your down with New York, your down with ONLY NY.

Now stocked at the Electrik Sheep.

Exclusive Mixtape Series #4: Coin Operated Boy

19.03.10

Like most of the DJs I know outside Newcastle I met Ed, a.k.a Coin Operated boy, through twitter. We keep good contact, and I’ve always been a big fan of his productions, with his track ‘Trust Me’ being a staple of my DJ sets recently. Ed is signed to Gash Digital and is on the cusp of releasing his third EP, ‘Katzenjammer’, while the aforementioned track ‘Trust Me’ coming out on Mr Jones label. And if all that wasn’t enough Ed, along with fellow Sheffield resident Louis Louis, is starting up a label called ‘Deadbeats’, which is shaping up to have some excited releases. I’ve looked forward to this mix for a while, and it doesn’t disappoint, so without further ado, I give you:

Lacoste A/W10 ‘Red’ Collection Preview

18.03.10

While in London yesterday I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at Lacoste’s ‘Red’ collection. This is nothing like what I expected it to be, and I was genuinely surprised at the line, it’s pretty solid. Small, but solid. We’re going to do a feature on it later on in the year, so for now here’s some sneak previews.
