It’s hard to be inspired by your run of the mill tope walls or a quiet corner in your local Starbucks. It goes without saying that if you want big ideas you need to be inspired by your surroundings. I was once told to travel, to see the world’s greatest cities, soak it in, and be inspired. Meet in New York works on those same principles. In essence a creative melting pot for people to develop the idea of tomorrow. Brainchild of the creative New York duo: Marc and Sara Schiller, we were desperate to take a look around, and inspired we were.

Harrison Boyce Interview
06.06.10

I’ve been a huge fan of Harrsion’s work for a while now, and I’ve wanted to interview him for Breaks Of 10 since we started the site. I remember when I first went on Defgrip and thinking finally a site that mirrored my view that there was more to life than BMX, and more to BMX than riding a bike. I’ve been hooked ever since. In all honesty, given the opportunity I could sit down for hours and pick Harrison’s brains about design, photography, online media, and BMX in general, however until I get that chance I’ll have to make due with this, not that it’s a consolation price by any stretch of the imagination. I caught up with Harrison over email last week, and could not be more stoked on the answers he gave. Ladies and gentleman, Harrison Boyce.

Watching My Name Go By
31.05.10
With a million and one stories to tell from my recent return to New York I get things started with some special insight into Faith and Graffiti. Originally hailing from back in 1973 the book depicted the birth of New York graffiti and people expressing themselves through paint on walls. Depicted through the words of Norman Mailer and the awe inspiring photographs of Jon Naar this slice of urban reference now takes on a new form with additional photos and project reflection from Jon himself. I had the pleasure of meeting Jon as he was joined by Wooster Collectives Marc & Sara Schiller along with some artists captured in the original book.

New York Good Times
25.05.10
So here we go. First post stateside! Awe inspiring trip so far with dinner at the Wooster Collective home with some of the biggest names in the street-art industry. In attendance we had WK Interact, Charming Baker, Remi-Rough, Stormie, Roa, and Prefab77. We talked over Wooster wine and Brooklyn lager amongst a collection of originals and prints more accustomed to the worlds finest galleries. The company was surreal, the food was a sensory delight, and the conversation was a true joy. Rem and Stormie had been busy on a stateside collaboration. Photos after the jump.

Tyneside Cinema to the LA premier
14.04.10

Now i’m proud of our local independent cinema and raved about the insight given in the Exit Through The Gift Shop movie. However, unfamiliar with the LA social circuit I think its best left to low-key street-wear brand The Hundreds to give you the real lowdown of the events stateside. As always stellar photography and write-up.

For 20 years, between 1966 and 1986, Californian shoe brand K-Swiss only sold one model of shoe, the Classic. To celebrate over 40 years of the shoe, K-Swiss have decided to tell the story of the shoe, which has quietly and subtly evolved over time, through the medium of graphic design. K-Swiss gathered up some of the best designers in the world and commissioned 8 posters, of which 400 will be printed of each, creating a collectors item for hardcore K-Swiss fans and sneakerfreaks everywhere. The artists involved are Mario Lombardo, Value & Service, Cobbenhagen & Hendriksen, Non-Format, Grand People, Sulki & Min, Mark Owens / Life Of The Mind and Fabian Jenny and you can check out all the posters and an overview after the jump.

Breaksof10 lives simply to showcase the enthusiasm and passion we share for those who pioneer and strive to develop and travel beyond the ordinary. These human anomalies showcase unrivalled drive and creativity in the day to day working of their craft. In each discipline there are those who compete to be the best – for the acclaim, the kudos, the esteem. For Bboy, and Red Bull BC1, the motivating factor for sixteen of the worlds finest consists of something deeper. Within the circle it’s about the battle, behind the eyes of every Bboy is a struggle, fuelled by individual circumstance, internal conflict, an overwhelming affliction to succeed. Each will enter, all will leave everything they have, only one will walk out and stand as Red Bull BC1 champion.

I was first aware of Gavin through my friend Lewis Hay, who showed me his blog about a year and a half ago. His work has always impressed me, whether it’s photos, design or vinyl toys, Gavin always puts 150% into everything he does, and always comes across as extremely positive and forward thinking. Like many skaters these days Gavin has made the move into riding fixed a lot more, and as usual, he can’t just ride fixed, he went out and made a film about Bristol’s large fixie community. The result is ‘BOIKZMOIND’, which he co-made with ‘Makinov’ (Jonny Clooney). The result is what is shaping up to be an epic video. I caught up with Gavin to find out more about the video. Plus, check out the awesome trailer after the jump.

You may have noticed that since the birth of breaksof10 we have often mentioned the Electrik Sheep in our content. Calm down animal rights activists there’s nothing sinister here rather a northern culture hub consisting of a streetwear store and gallery built upon the foundations of a graphic design agency; Reluctant Hero. Pure and simple Breaksof10 would not exist if it were not for this beacon of creative peoples. Therefore here is a long overdue introduction.
