Trials and Tribulations – King Apparel Interview

12.08.10

When the opportunity first arose to interview the guys over at King Apparel, I was initially dubious, seeing as the boys at the Daily Street had already done a fine job. However, I decided to go a different route, and talk about the trials and tribulations of starting up and running a UK streetwear brand. You see obstacles and pitfalls are something that King have had their fair share of, yet regardless of this, have built and amazing brand in a relatively short space of time. When I went to shoot the photos to accompany this interview yesterday, Tim (right) told me of more recent challenges they’re currently facing, just proved that its not all fun and games running a brand.

The brand is currently maturing, and after seeing a sneak peek of next years collections, I’m really impressed with where they’re going, really good quality cut n sew pieces with intricate details, while still retaining it’s London heritage and without moving away from the brand’s ethos. Tim took time out to answer some questions on the above matters, so check it out!

Sheffields Finest – The Bakery

06.08.10

I’ve always thought that menswear is easy. Easy to come across, easy to accessorise, easy to look individual in and easy to express through. But recently,  a flow of Topman t-shirt wearing gents have come into my vision and I can’t help thinking that maybe it is just as hard for guys to track down a source of unique apparel. If you are a young male, looking for some relaxed street wear that the guy next to you isn’t going to have, where do you go?

The answer – www.thebakerystore.co.uk a gem of an online shopping haven for anyone who likes good music and would like to look somewhat dapper whilst out and about listening to said good music. With a bevy of products and brands The Bakery is fast becoming THE trend hotspot. The website is visually a treat, easy to use for those of us used to paying only via a chip and pin machine and for those lazy shoppers, if you get bored you can take a break from filling up your basket and have a quick read of interviews with fellow Yorkshire offering; Toddla T. The best thing about The Bakery? There’s a little something for the ladies too.

I caught up with my very well dressed friend Rich, mastermind behind The Bakery in his office in Sheffield for a few questions.

Martelo Interview

27.07.10

When I first started going out with my boyfriend we, like many couples, had that conversation where we say who our free pass fling is. Mine was Mos Def, his was the actress Rashida Jones. Unlike Louis I went on to see my free pass crush in the flesh at a concert in Shepherd’s Bush, unfortunately the reality of my dreamboat was not quite how I had imagined …  Luckily I think I’ve found a new free pass candidate.

London based DJ/ Producer Ryan Maher aka Martelo may ring a few bells for you most recently as Santogold’s tour DJ but there is a whole lot more to learn about this music maker. You will of course know the “Do you all have your 3-D glasses” mixtape and if you don’t, find it now.  His steady rise from success to success can be tracked by the caliber of attention he’s attracted and the bookings he’s playing. A-Trak and  Kanye West and Coachella festival and of course Fabric to name but a few.

Martelo has managed to fuse a smoothness associated with Hip Hop and R’n’B  with that irresistible and current roughness of grimier sounds.Want more? Read on.

Counting Cats: High Rankin Interview

15.07.10

I’m not sure how to describe Will Rankin, a.k.a ‘High Rankin’. Eccentric? Maybe. Friendly? Definitely (When I met him he humped my leg). Talented? Without a doubt. However what left the biggest impression on me when I met Will was that he didn’t conform to the usual ‘Big DJ’ bullshit that most others in his position do. Instead of staying in the DJ booth the whole time and trying to avoid talking to drunk fans he spent the entire time he wasn’t DJing in the crowd, dancing and enjoying the music just as everyone else was, it was awesome and left a really good impression on everyone in the club that night. So without further ado I give you the weird and wonderful world of High Rankin…

Harrison Boyce Interview

06.06.10

I’ve been a huge fan of Harrsion’s work for a while now, and I’ve wanted to interview him for Breaks Of 10 since we started the site. I remember when I first went on Defgrip and thinking finally a site that mirrored my view that there was more to life than BMX, and more to BMX than riding a bike. I’ve been hooked ever since. In all honesty, given the opportunity I could sit down for hours and pick Harrison’s brains about design, photography, online media, and BMX in general, however until I get that chance I’ll have to make due with this, not that it’s a consolation price by any stretch of the imagination. I caught up with Harrison over email last week, and could not be more stoked on the answers he gave. Ladies and gentleman, Harrison Boyce.

Kate Moross Interview

14.05.10

I’m pleased to welcome aboard Yuriko to the Breaksof10 team, she’s joining us as a contribution writer, and she’s kicking things off with this interview with Kate Moross. Welcome aboard Yuriko!

Remember when you were in your early teens and you had one friend who you truly idolized. A crush if you will, not of celebrity status but just that bit older, that bit untouchable and does everything with a signature edge of cool. I was very fortunate to have Kate Moross as my teen crush, a year older than me and a friend from summer camp, I was sure her pores leaked talent. She could sing, climb trees, she was allowed to go shopping in Camden without adult supervision and bought the coolest things like No Doubt albums and shag bands in their hundreds.

Interview: Dead Beats Label

03.05.10

I always try and live by the mantra ‘be the change you want to see in the world’, and as much as I try and live by that, it’s equally inspiring to see my friends conduct their lives in the same way. My friends Louis and Ed (louis on the right, Ed left), or as you may know them from their previous appearances on here, Louis Louis and Coin Operated boy, have started their own indie record label ‘Dead Beats’. Dead Beats is not for profit, simply for the love of music and the motivating factor that not only were other labels not really doing it for them, but they had a group of talented music making friends that simply weren’t getting the recognition they deserved. I’ve wanted to get this interview done for a while, and it finally came together last month when I went down to Sheffield to DJ with Louis. So, without further ado, I give you Dead Beats label.

Louie Vega and a Decade of Soul Heaven

21.04.10

Often we praise those who push beyond the confines and boundaries of the current day Producer/DJ. We look for the new pioneers, techniques and the future of the industry. We are all used to hearing “In New Music We Trust” However this is my tribute to a ten-year landslide of Soul, Disco, and House. I take great pleasure in dissecting ten years of success that has lay witness to an array of both national and international talents take stage including the likes of Kenny Dope, Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, and Jazzy Jeff to name but a few. From Ibiza to Miami, sell-out shows to pool parties, this soul inspired disco armada shows little sign of slowing down, and I take time to ask Louie Vega what’s next?
